Joe Kochanowski

Joe "Road Warrior" Kochanowski is the most prolific home-builder of all the people I know. Joe builds massive, speedy, frightening bikes. Here are a few pictures of Joe and a bike he's building up for me that we've dubbed the Joetator.

The Joetator

Joe is demonstrating on advantage of a low bike -- when you stop at a light, you don't need to unclip from the pedals, you just put your hand down.

Yep, that's side stick steering. Piloting the Joetator is something like driving a bulldozer. Those are dual 20 inch wheels and the rear section is a suspended swing arm with old bike inner tubes forming the elastomer.

This is the functional core of the Joetator. When completed, the side sticks will be cut down a bit lower and the entire bike cased in a full body fairing. With the fairing, the bike is about 12 feet long!

I took deliver of the Joetator on January 24, 1998. The bike barely fit inside my friend Tony's full sized van. This is me inside the Joetator.

Here is another shot of me inside the Joetator. I'll be covering the faring frame with a skin made of plastic tarp material and duct tape. I'll also be putting a big headlight in the nose section.

So just how big is the Joetator? Here it is next to a Geo Metro for size comparison. The pilot here is the legendary Mr. Kochanowski himself.
